CEEBOI: The Rap Speedster

Not often do you find a raw rap talent, but it is even more rare to find a talented up and coming rapper with the confidence to go. Discovering Street Legends Records signee, CeeBoi is truly a memorable occurrence. It happened in one of those moments of surfing Instagram for amusing content. That particular exercise led me to a freestyle video of rapper with cornrow plaited hair but the beauty was in his craft. He was waxing lyrical on the instrumental of Fugees’ “Ready or Not.” He rapped mostly in Yoruba but with interesting introduction of lines constructed in English language.

The rap was fast, smooth and some of the lines took me aback. How can a rapper be so good and I haven’t heard of him? I mean, I have over 4000 music albums, most of them Hip-hop albums, and a significant fraction of the archive contains projects of real-good underground rappers that are known to only those Hiphop faithfuls who search below the surface for mind-blowing materials. So how come I never heard of “CeeBoi”, who raps with the speed of Busta Rhymes and the precision of Eminem.

Even more interesting is the persona he uses to carry his art. He is a self-assured talent who claims appellations like “Best Rapper” and “Fastest Nigerian Rapper” for himself. Scrolling through his page to his post of May 1st,2018; I found  another freestyle video in which he rolled out 415 words in only 49 seconds. This figure is no joke and it is no surprise that he featured on KrizBeatz  2017 “Afro Dance Music” album, on the most Hip-hop-styled track of the project titled “Best Rapper.”

On the record, CeeBoi going on telling his listener why he deserves to be on his listener’s list of best rappers alongside greats like 2Pac, Biggie and co. If there is something CeeBoi has in abundance, it is ambition – ambition to do great things with rap, leave a legacy, perhaps. His professional journey to greatness starts with his forthcoming collaborative EP with KrizBeatz, titled “Protégé.” The project is slated for next year and from the visible signs, big names like Sean Tizzle and perhaps, Mayorkun would give him the needed support to prove his credentials as a potential “Best Rapper.”
