This is scary!!!
A 19-year-old from the UK almost died after a terrifying encounter with a bison while hiking in South Dakota!
June 16, Amelia “Mia” Deanfriend, and his friend’s dog were on the second day of a month-long cross-country road trip when they decided to go hiking on the way to Custer State Park. Unfortunately, things took a drastic turn as they reached the end of the trail.

Mia’s father, Matthew Deanhe told Dakota News Now:
“They came to the top of the mountain and saw down in the dip, far away from them, they saw a big male buffalo.”
When the two thought of turning around to avoid the big animal, but the big animal didn’t seem bothered by their presence either. Moreover, they had been walking for almost two hours and they were tired. Mia told the media that:
“I was dehydrated, it was really sunny, and we were both giving the dog our water an hour ago.”
Ultimately they decided their best option was to move on all around buffalo. But this decision would be a disaster. his mother, Jacqueline Deanhe told the newspaper that the climbers went around the buffalo and returned to the road when there were problems, explaining:
“Suddenly the buffalo looked up. They were over 100 meters away and the buffalo just ran down the hill towards them. It appeared and stopped in front of him and it was seen that they looked into each other’s eyes for a few seconds.”
Mia recalled how close she was to the wild creature, explaining:
“I could have put my hand on his forehead without fully stretching it.”
What could have been an amazing moment face to face with the incredible forces of nature quickly turned into a brutal struggle for survival.
After staring for a while, the buffalo hit the youngster’s left thigh with its horn and threw him up “into the air,” Jacqueline said, with Matthew adding:
“We’re told 10 to 15 feet.”
Mia only remembers flashes of the near-death experience, saying:
“I remember feeling pressure on my hip. My hip is pushed back and I remember the feeling of flying through the air and walking head over heels.”
He went on to say:
“The buffalo stuck and its hooves were on top of my head. I remember they treated me very badly.”
Thankfully, Jacqueline was able to hook the creature and call for help. Phew! Thank goodness for his quick thinking! Unfortunately, it was too late to record his friend escaping unharmed.
Now Mia has been in the hospital for seven weeks. In GoFundMe on the page, Mia’s family noted that she was “completely torn apart [her] femoral artery” and badly injured his leg — but they also expressed gratitude that it wasn’t too bad:
“We are lucky that our daughter is still breathing, as she should have bled 2-8 minutes after the artery was cut and the ambulance did not arrive for 20 minutes. It is a miracle that he is alive today.”
Mia agrees, saying it’s a “miracle” she survived until the ambulance arrived “not to mention” when it did. Memorial Life in Rapid City, per Dakota News Now.

He has a long health battle ahead of him as the buffalo also damaged his tibial and peroneal nerves, leaving him paralyzed from the knee down in one of his legs. His family is hoping to raise enough money to go to the clinic for tests and surgery Mayo Clinicnoting that his travel insurance will not cover all costs. They share the fundraiser:
“Mia is British and although her travel insurance has paid for the femoral artery bypass so far they are refusing to pay for even the first specialist assessment of her nerve damage. The Mayo Clinic, a world-class hospital in the area of peripheral nerves (a very good field), accepted Mia as a referral from Rapid City Hospital. Mia’s injuries are complex to begin with, including both vascular and nerve damage, but the nerve damage itself is also complex and extensive. This could be Mia’s best chance to regain control of her foot, and time is ticking.”
Mia was planning to go Edinburgh University this fall after taking a gap year to travel the world. She has been an avid dancer since she was young, which makes this leg injury even more difficult. His family will not know why this happened to him, but they believe that “God has a plan and a purpose for him because it was not yet his time to die,” writing:
“We don’t know why this happened to our little girl, and we just want her to be able to walk and dance again and live her life to the fullest, without long-term chronic pain.”
Sending lots of love to Mia as she recovers!! You can hear more about his story (below).
