Netflix has canceled First Kill after its first season, but fans express disappointment as similar show Heartstopper has secured two more seasons.

Produced by Victoria Schwab, First Kill is based on the story of two teenage girls, Calliope (Imani Lewis) and Juliet (Sarah Katherine Hooks), as they fall for each other. However, both of their families are the biggest enemies in the form of Vampire Hunters and Bloodsuckers. As feelings develop between the two, the two are forbidden to be together – a total modern Romeo and Juliet fantasy with an LGBTQ+ layer.
As soon as the news of First Kill getting the ax without any real finale surfaced, fans of the show started comparing it to the similar Netflix series Heartstopper. It also focuses on young LGBTQ characters who fall in love.
Netflix cancels First Kill after one season
Two months after First Kill released eight episodes on the streaming platform, Netflix announced that the series would not be renewed for another reason. This comes despite the show having over 100 million hours of views.
According to Variety, the decision came down to the series’ viewership after they couldn’t benefit from the cost of recreating a new eight episode.
As the unfortunate news of its cancellation went viral, actor Dominic Goodman, who narrated the role of Apollo Burns, expressed his gratitude to the audience. Twitter account.
He wrote: “To all First Kill fans; I have nothing but love for each and every one of you! Thank you all for making the show my own, looking at you all it looks like it took all the hard work and Has made the hours worth it. Till the next project.”
Angry fans compare show to Heartstopper
Fans were stunned to speak up after the second season of First Kill was revealed to have been called off. They think it left the love story between Calliope and Juliet off to a rock.
Frustrated viewers expressed anger, as their hopes of renewing it, like the similar series Heartstopper, were crushed. Some viewers alleged that the streaming platform did not want to cover the stories of the gay vampire drama First Kill. However, there is no proof of this as Netflix curates movies and TV shows from different perspectives of the LGBTQ+ community.
A viral tweet pointed to a high gap in viewership, as the screenshots show that First Kill had doubled in the week after Heartstopper’s release.

Although many popular Netflix shows and series have been extended for one season or more, the network has decided to cancel some others as well. So First Kill isn’t the only Netflix show to be canceled this year.
