World cup: England score three in first half against Iran

The match chalkboard shows it’s been all England so far, although most of their passes have come in their own half or middle third of the pitch.

The purple squares mark the Iran passes – there haven’t been many. It is Iran who seize a moment, getting their first real touches of the ball in the England half. They win a free-kick too. They can ask some questions of the England defence with this. England need to go again now. The early momentum lost, they need to build it back up again. Surely there is no way Alireza Beyranvand should have carried on there? The poor guy looks in a really bad way.

He is carried off on a stretcher to big cheers. Alireza Beyranvand is a big loss to Iran. Hossein Hosseini, who plays for Esteghlal in the Persian Gulf League, is on for his competitive international debut.

Bayranvand’s World Cup could well be over now, with concussion protocols.

We’re also going to have about 10 added minutes at the end of this half. Things just keep getting bigger and better for Bellingham. What a stage to score your first England international goal. He has been doing this all season in the Champions League for Dortmund. Great ball in form Luke Shaw, spot on, but what a header that is. England get the goal that they have thoroughly deserved. What a finish from Jude Bellingham. A huge chant of Juuddddeeeee from the jubilant England fans as he beautifully heads home the opener. English flags are waving. More than deserved after the start they have made. Jude Bellingham – the young superstar in England’s midfield – scores his first international goal with a peach of guided header from Luke Shaw’s superb cross. He rises higher than his marker in the middle and finds the far corner of the net. Bellingham is a bit more of a threat in midfield, he will put tackles in and score goals. A real bonus for Gareth Southgate to get him now in the form that he is in. Bukayo Saka – another young Lion finding his way in this England side – scores an absolute belter, lashing in over the diving Iran keeper after a corner is headed down to him by Harry Maguire.

The Iranian players are raging at the ref, saying Maguire fouled his marker. He fouled him in the same way he himself was “fouled” earlier from the first corner of the game. England are blowing Iran away! Raheem Sterling hasn’t been in the best of form this season, but this is a great finish, on the volley with the outside of his boot.

Harry Kane’s cross supplied it after a superb run and pass from Jude Bellingham. It was a stalled, broken-up half but pretty much the perfect one for England. They started well against a good side and then started well again after the injury to Iran keeper Alireza Beyranvand.

Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling the scorers of three superb goals. England have made their statement, scoring three fantastic goals and have ticked all the boxes. Iran look overwhelmed by the occasion.
